Getting started
How do I install Pet Break Reminder?
Open the Chrome Web Store listing and click Add to Chrome. After installing, click the puzzle-piece icon in your toolbar and pin Pet Break Reminder so it stays visible.
Where it works
Which sites does it run on?
Pet Break Reminder only runs on six social-media sites: X (Twitter), YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, Threads, and Bluesky. It does not load on any other site, and it cannot read or modify the page content even on the sites it does run on — it only watches whether the tab is in focus and shows a transparent overlay when your time is up.
Tuning it
How do I change the usage limit or break time?
Click the Pet Break Reminder icon in your toolbar to open the popup. From there you can set:
- Usage limit — how many minutes you can spend on a target site before the pet appears (default 30, range 1–480).
- Break time — how long the pet stays on screen with a countdown (default 5, range 1–60).
- Target sites — turn each of the six sites on or off individually.
Settings are saved when you click Save and apply immediately to the active tab.
How the timer behaves
Why does the timer reset when I switch tabs?
By design. Pet Break Reminder only counts time when the target site's tab is both visible and focused. If you switch tabs, minimize the window, or let the browser go to the background, the timer pauses and resets. The goal is to react to actual scrolling time, not to background tabs you forgot about.
Troubleshooting
The pet didn't appear after the time limit. What should I check?
A few things to verify:
- The site is one of the six supported social-media sites.
- The site's checkbox is enabled in the popup.
- You stayed on the tab continuously, with the window focused. Switching away resets the count.
- You reached the full usage limit. The default is 30 minutes; adjust it in the popup if you want a shorter test.
- If you just installed the extension on a site you already had open, refresh that tab once.
Custom pets
Can I use my own dog or cat as the reminder pet?
Not yet — but soon. We are designing a custom-pet service so you can send us your pet's photos and we will produce a transparent reminder pet just for you. Leave your email on the notify list and we will let you know when it launches.
Privacy and data
Will I see ads, or is my data sold?
No, and no. Pet Break Reminder collects no data, makes no network calls, and contains no advertising or tracking. Your settings live in your browser only. See the Privacy Policy for the full statement.
Removing it
How do I uninstall?
Right-click the Pet Break Reminder icon in your toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome, or open chrome://extensions, find Pet Break Reminder, and click Remove. Your saved settings are removed at the same time — the extension does not store anything outside your browser.
